Is there any other interior design style that expresses more balance and serenity through clear lines and colors than the Japanese interior style? I think the Japanese style fits every tiny living, may it be a tiny house, a small apartment, even an RV or houseboat. It fits tiny living because it creates an uncluttered look that emanates balance and a deep love for simple natural beauty.
Here are some thoughts about how you can add Japanese style to your tiny home on a grand scale or smaller, as you wish and as it fits your tiny home the best.
The Japanese style displays a deeply rooted love and respect for nature. This connection to nature can be brought into every tiny home through plants of course or through natural materials. If you choose to add plants to your home, it’s the best to stay with sleek simple plants such as a palm in order to keep the clean Japanese touch.
Natural materials on the other hand can be bamboo and wooden components of all kinds. These wooden or bamboo textures can be added in form of screens or as floor material. Many – and I count myself in – love bamboo for different purposes, such as cutting boards or as an utensil holder. Bamboo and wood certainly create instantaneously a calming atmosphere.
Japanese design uses wooden frames for doors and windows which in turn express clear lines, forms and structures. Following the love for nature the Japanese inspired windows are large and bring therefore plentiful light in a tiny home. If you build your own tiny house, you might consider building unconventional window frames, such as round or oval allowing a view of the outdoors from every angle of your home.
If you can’t change the windows or rooms you’re living in, for example in a small apartment, RV or houseboat, you might find yourself adding some Japanese décor items to your home. The Japanese letters for peace, love and health are available as easy applicable and removable wall decal stickers that you can place as and where you wish. Since Japanese style speaks minimalism, you follow this tendency by just adding this one Japanese inspired element to your home.
One other main quality of the Japanese style is its ability to play with light and darkness with surprising ease. Playing with light and darkness is a very strong element that creates a spacious feeling as well as a peaceful atmosphere for a narrow or small room. The right handling of light and shadow in a home makes what we could call a zen-like harmony.
The room and what you want to use it for decide how you handle light and shadow. Japanese style encourages natural light in large part. If you can’t change your window size or you don’t have one of those great skylights, you still can let natural light flow in through unobstructed windows that are maybe just covered by a simple bamboo shade or very light almost gauzy curtains.
I put together a bedroom combo in Japanese style (a futon set and a tatami) as well as a wall decal sticker with Japanese letters. Sleeping on a Japanese style tatami and futon does not just provide great sleep – as many confirm – but offers also the advantage that in the morning you can fold up your bed and store it away.
EMOOR Compact Twin Japanese Futon Set

- Lightweight, foldable and easy to store
- Anti-bacterial stuffing for futon mattress
- Futon size: 37.41” x 76.80” x 3.9”
- Comforter size: 59.07” x 78.77” x 3.1”
- Pillow size: 16.93” x 24.81” x 4.3”
The shikibuton (mattress) itself it surprisingly comfortable. The kakebuton (comforter) was vacuum sealed and when opened it was huge, comfy, fluffy and awesome. The pillow also very comfortable. EMOOR is awesome. HIGHLY recommended.
The pillow gives the appropriate amount of support, just enough to keep your spine aligned properly. The mattress itself is similar, it’s just enough cushion to give you support and be comfortable. I find it to be quite pleasant to lie down on. Finally the comforter is amazing, once it’s on you absolutely no cold gets through to you. No exaggeration either, it’s that good. I haven’t woke up with a single ache or pain of any sort since I bought this, I will never go back to our overly soft, pricey beds!
Finally I decided to return to my roots and use futon. I really should have done it sooner. I wake up refreshed (no back pain) and the only sad part is having to leave warmth and comfort of the futon.
Japanese Traditional Igusa Tatami Twin Mattress
- Made of 100% Lush grass (grown in Japan)
- Usable as oriental rug or underlay mattress for Japanese futons
- Folded in 3
- Size: 83” L x 39” W x 0.5” H
This traditional atami mat simply enhances wonderfully, the authentic Japanese sleep experience. The tatami is all natural, smells faintly of new mown hay (not overpowering) and keeps me nicely separated from the carpeted floor where I lay out my futon/ shikibuton every night. This tatami feel so much more grounded and more natural than the yoga mat I previously used as an underlay. It folds up and stores handily behind a dresser. Very good product, good price, good service — buy it if you’re sleeping on a floor futon!
Excellent quality, extremely comfortable.
This is a very nice quality tatami. The reverse side has a non-slip quality to it that is a nice touch. This is a thin and foldable mat. It’s perfect!

They look terrific. The quality of the vinyl is really solid and thick. To the point where a few mistakes you think you might have made when hanging them up are 0 percent noticeable once you stand back and look at it. No regrets with this purchase.
This piece of artwork fits beautifully. It fills the wall and adds character. It was very easy to apply. I absolutely love it and would recommend to anyone who is seeking a classy piece of unique art.
Easy to apply and professional looking. Looked awesome in my asian inspired bedroom!
