Some people transform an outdoor flower planter into a grill just to have a mini grill for their tiny apartment‘s balcony. Well, you don‘t need to go through all that trouble. There are great mini grills available working with charcoal that are lightweight enough to be carried wherever you want to grill.
A mini charcoal grill is perfect for every tiny living, may it be a tiny house, a small apartment, RV, houseboat or Camper. And when you get this little guy consider adding a great grilling accessory to it. A chimney starter.
I had this mini charcoal grill back in Switzerland. As I mentioned it already there are many rules around apartment living in Switzerland. One of them is the rule about grilling on the balcony, meaning at some apartments it‘s allowed at others not. I was lucky enough to have an apartment with a tiny balcony, the official permission to grill there and nice understanding neighbors – who by the way loved to be invited …!
What I was fighting with in my beginning career as griller was the charcoal. I used a lot because I didn’t want to pour liquid fire starter over it (I always considered that as being unhealthy) and I never succeeded in getting the charcoal to be lit evenly. Until – I participated in a culinary school‘s course about grilling. There I learned that there is something ingenious available called chimney starter.
You fill the underneath bottom with newspaper – some use even fire starters – turn the chimney around and insert charcoal into the chimney itself, as many coal as you need. Then light the newspaper with a match and wait about 10 to 15 minutes. I used to place the chimney starter into the grill. I had no place elsewhere without damaging the balcony floor – because it gets really fast really hot. After the charcoals turn gray from the heat you dump them into the grill and voilà! Your grill is ready!
As urban or tiny house dweller you need something small that still has a big enough grilling surface. But the grill itself shouldn’t be too big. This detail is also important when you want to bring your little grill to your picnic, to camping or just to your friend‘s garden party. Make sure that the size of the grill and of the chimney starter works for your available space.
And then, have fun with a great charcoal grill and grilling experience.
Weber Go-Anywhere Charcoal Grill

- Plated steel legs to secure lid in place for transport
- Lid includes a glass-reinforced nylon handle that stays cool during cooking
- 2 adjustable dampers each with 3 vent holes regulate the flow of air

This grill is wonderful for small barbecue jobs. It grills beautifully and after I’m done grilling and have closed all the vents the grill cools down fairly fast. When I received the grill it took me perhaps 5 minutes to attach the handles and the legs. Instructions were simple. Very happy with this grill.
We live in a city and have no yard. Our opportunities for grilling come when we take it to a park or go traveling. This grill is more functional for our purposes and it compacts beautifully for the trunk of our car.
Used this within a week of receiving! The design is perfect for slow and coal flavor infusing cooking. Extremely happy with this purchase. No burnt food and the metal bottom held out against the coal well.

This is, by far, the greatest accessory I’ve purchased for my charcoal grill. All you need is a sheet of paper and your coals are ready to go in about 15 mins. This is a 100% must have for any charcoal griller!!
I bought this as an add on to the Weber Premium Charcoal Grill and boy are we glad we did. It’s LARGE and holds a lot of charcoal. This makes life a LOT easier. The handle stays cool no matter what and you can easily fit enough coals in this to cook for hours without refilling it. This gets your grill up to 500 degrees and ready to cook pretty fast.
