All you Need to Know about Composting at Home

Spin Bin Compost TumblerYou don‘t need to worry about not being able to compost at home because your home is small as a tiny house. Even in a small apartment or RV or houseboat you‘re able to compost as you wish.

The following list includes composting tools that you can use indoors in your kitchen and composting tools that you can use in your tiny backyard or just outside your tiny house.

First let‘s take a look at how you can compost or collect composting material at home in your kitchen. You have two ways to go.

For one you need a compost bin. There are great compost bins available with small footprints so they don‘t take away precious countertop space in your small kitchen. A good compost bin doesn’t smell or leak liquids making it really easy for you to empty it whenever you have time. A compost bin is great for a small kitchen in a small apartment, in an RV or houseboat. You collect the compostables in it and empty it at the official place.

The other way works with a food waste bag in which you collect the compostables just like it would be a compost bin. But you don‘t need to empty the bag into the compost. It‘s biodegradable meaning you can just throw the whole bag with its content into the compost. It will decompose together with the food waste. You can use and keep the biobag food waste bag as it is on the countertop or you place it into a bin, maybe even a compost bin if you want to.

For everybody who has the opportunity to go a step further by having a backyard or space outdoors around the house, here are two more composting ideas for you.

Additional to the gathering of the compostables in compost bins or food waste bags you can have your own compost tumbler. It‘s easier than it sounds. There are many compost tumblers available that come with a small but still great size. None of them leak smell or liquids. And all are easy to fill and easy to remove the soil. Having your own compost tumbler is great. You don‘t need to get any organic soil builder or anything like that for your garden plants anymore. Your compost tumbler produces the best soil you can have, you know what‘s in there.

In order to accelerate the composting process in your compost tumblers you can use a compost starter that should be organic as well. A compost starter works in the composter by breaking down the organic matter faster producing better soil for the plants. It improves therefore the soil quality, increases the root mass and promotes plant growth. Additionally it helps your garden resist disease, insects, drought and other unfavorable conditions.

Here are the compost tools that will help you having your own composting actions at home.

It looks good on the countertop.  It has a carrying handle, unlike your average pot with a lid on it.  It is well-proportioned – tall enough to hold a good amount of stuff without having a huge footprint on the countertop, but not so tall that it tips over.

Quality construction. We keep it next to our kitchen sink and empty it each evening.  The filters in the cover seem to be very effective in controlling any odors.

Great product!  I have 2 on my kitchen counter and there’s no smell, and they’re light weight enough to carry out to the apartment garden a ways away.

The small bags work out perfectly for small trash cans that are changed out often.

It starts to break down within a couple of days of use, especially if any of the compost is damp.

I have been using these for compost for a few months now and they are great.  I keep my compost in the freezer and change it every two days but these bags hold up great to even heavy items that I want to compost.

Night and day difference in my compster. I added this and it has been a few weeks, my compost went from looking like a bunch of veggies and leaves to a nice black dirt.

This worked really well for me. I started to compost this year. My kids are amazed that paper and veggie left overs really do turn into dirt.

We have been using this all summer in our first compost we have even had and it is working great. Very happy with it.
